I'm getting some training at work just now on a software package. As a nice side-effect, I've learned the following:
- three dots, like so ... are called an ellipse (been trying to find that out for ages!)
- hyphens are severely mis-used! The correct rules for using hyphens, em dashes (—)) and en dashes (–) are thus [gleaned from here]:
- use a hyphen to join words, for example re-use
- an em dash is what we normally think of as a hyphen, and should be used in the same way as parentheses; a true em dash is more like a double hyphen
- an en dash is used to indicate inclusive dates or numbers, for example 9th July–8th August
